Final Project: How Will We Help

SUBJECT
Veterens Post War Benefits
By Lenita Figgins

SUBJECT GUIDE INFORMATION SHEET:
GOVERNMENT & AMERICAN SOLDIERS POST IRAQ WAR

OVERVIEW

My topic has to do with the government and soldiers of Iraq War and what policies and programs are in place to assist with their mental, physical and financial transition after the war. I have not heard any discussion from the government as to how we help the soldiers cope with life here back in America.
When choosing this topic I tried to focus more on what issues or if any the government had addressed, but was not able to get much, but I also looked at public opinions or even what some soldiers who have returned had faced. What I have found is that we as a government really have not thought or even given much help to assist.

D. REFERENCE SOURCES
Reference books provide background information and overviews on a given topic. Some relevant reference books in psychology include:

1) Library of Congress: Haunted by combat: understanding PTSD in war veterans including women, reservists, and those coming back from Iraq / Daryl S. Paulson and Stanley Krippner; introduction by Jeffrey Kirkwood. Westport, Conn.: Praeger Security International, 2007.
Call# RC552.P67 P38 2007
This article gave an inside look at what type of mental issues a soldiers has or will face post a serious war and what it will take to overcome such an illness.

2) http://encarta.msn.com
“Department of Veterans Affairs” by Edward C. Cass M.A. Ph.D 1997-2008
This article just explains the various departments within that have different programs available for veterans.

3) http:// www.Los Angeles Public Library U. S. Dept. of Veterans Affairs GPO ; U. S. Dept. of Veterans Affairs R 355.115 U543 [NH ]

E. PRINT BOOKS
1) “Soldiers Returning From Iraq and Afghanistan: The Long –term Costs of Providing Veterans Medical Care and Disability Benefits”. By Linda Bilmes
This book relates because it gives not only statistics but how much it will cost to provide and rehabilitate
the veterans.

2) “Operation Homecoming: Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Home Front, in the Words of U.S. Troops and Their Families” by Andrew Carroll published by Random House Sept 2006.
This book really addresses touches my topic by addressing it not only from the soldiers on account from the front lines to home but lets the families tell their story of what effects they deal with when that soldier returns home.

3) “Courage After Fire: Coping Strategies for Troops Returning From Iraq and Afghanistan and Their Families” by Keith Armstrong, Suzanne Best and Paula Domenici published by Ulysses Press Dec 2005
It helps explain my question as what state of mind will these soldiers come home in. It is written by a group of psychologist who gives views as to what and how soldiers mental state will be and how transition back into society.

F. PERIODICALS
For all of these periodicals I typed in government periodicals and was given a list of various articles. Scroll down the list and choose which one is relevant to the topic of discussion.

1) Foreign Policy Magazine – http://foreignpolicymagazine.com . Its deals with all aspects of government issues.

2) Journal of U.S Army Medical Department - http://library.louisville.edu/government/federal/agencies/defense/armymedical.html

Reflection 5

Wow what can I say except that out of all my online courses I have taken this has to be the most interesting and learning experience of them all. In the fall I will be taking 3 classes online and I think by taking this course will not only enhance my research knowledge but assist me in anything I do in school or work. The advantages of online classes is that for some who works 40+ hours as i do sometimes, I can come home and work at my own pace as long as i keep up, but it also has it draw backs like if you really need some help and the instructor may not be there or being able to turn to a classmate and request assistant. As i stated in my early blog I thought i was signing up for a easy course, but by no means was this an easy course, it was challanging and very informative. I really recommend this course to anyone who even thinks that they have research technique down, because trust me when you take this course you will find that you know nothing. TAKE THE COURSE!!!!!!

Good Luck to all in the Fall

Reflection 4 "Information R/Evolution"

Information Literacy, or Information Competency, briefly defined, is the ability to locate, evaluate, and use information to become independent life-long learners. I think that all competent students should be able to see the need for information or know how to get the infromation. As a competent student I learn to get proper inforamtion and choose the correct sources for inforamtion. How to retrieve the and evaluate the information from various databases or other means. I think that I may not still be the most competent student, but I'm a competent student in route to being the best.

Reflection 3

Well i thought when i choose this course it would be a breeze just the title "Library 3" makes you think how much could be required, well i was wrong. I have a new found appreciation for the any course that has "library" as a course. Since being in this class and doing all the research needed for each assignment has been a challange. As i stated before we always think that we know everything, but until you really have to apply your knowledge you find that there are more and better ways to research. I have always use the internet to do research by just typing in a keyword or phrase and what ever comes up i use, but taking this class has showed me a lot more ways and other avenues to use. From databases to various websites and most of all how to blog. Would i recommend this course, YES I say never under estimate a course with the title "Library"

Reflection 2

I think that looking at all that I have learned so far in this course and about libraries. I still feel the same as I stated in my first Blog. I never knew or thought about the importance of a library the way I have now. Doing the assignments for this course has given me the opportunity to really see just how useful and knowledgeable they can be. Also using the internet is convenient just that maybe you don't have the time to get to the library it gives just as much information to get what you need done. Having the internet also helps me communicate with others on various topics and you have discussions.

Reflection 1

O.k. now who would have guess that a libaray course would help me learn how to blog. Since being in this class i'm learning cool stuff. We all think that we are computer or internet smart, but when someone can show you that there is more and fun ways to research than you really don't know much. So my recommendation to take the LIB3 course you might learn something.

Library Visit

I went to the Lakewood Library (Angelo M. Iacoboni) located at 4990 Clark Ave in the City of Lakewood since its walking distance from my house. Its a single level buliding attached to City Hall. This library has a variety of sections from fiction, non-fiction, a very good reference section. In the entrance they offer brochures on various programs offered throughout the city of Lakewood (parks, malls, busline etc). I found that they offer a variety of materials like DVD's , Books on DVD, Music Cd and other collections. They also offer online catalogs, public access to the internet and meeting rooms for rent. I really enjoyed my experience the staff was nice and helpful and variety of services and information offered. Never thought the library could be fun and interesting. When i walk to city hall to paybills i find myself going into the library just to see what's new or for the quite atmosphere. What i like to see here is the large section for children which you find a lot sitting down reading or checking out many books to read. They have such a friendly staff who is always willing to assist you with locating the materials you need. They not only offer bookclub for children, but adults and seniors. Since taking this course i find myself walking to the library more often than before plus its good exercise.
